Foundations

I believe that at the beginning of anything is a beautiful time to lay down a foundation. Anytime we begin a new class, we must always start with the foundations of whatever we are learning. Without the foundation of the material, the remaining material would be confusing and our brains wouldn't be able to absorb it. It's because we'd be missing the foundational, base groundwork that comes before all the other steps or building blocks.

In the infant stages of my relationship with God, my foundation did not get laid down like it should have so that made it difficult to stick with it when life got tough. I found it extremely easy to get distracted or emotionally fall apart during my first year of college. It's because my foundation in Jesus had not been laid down and I was trying to stand up in my own strength when I was not strong enough to do so. Needless to say, I was not winning.

Matthew 7:24-27 is all about building your house, meaning your life, on the rock that which is Jesus.

Matthew 7:24-27 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Just as we build homes on foundations of cement, so should we build our lives. Jesus says that “Everyone who hears these words… and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Homes that are built intentionally on cement and reinforced are not as susceptible to storms and hurricane force winds. It's just wisdom. Nobody who want their house to stay standing would build on anything that wasn't as firm as a rock.

Essentially what it means is that if you hear God’s voice or read something from the Bible that convicts you to change and actually obey it, your foundation will be laid down and strengthened. When we allow the Word of God to saturate our lives and actually transform our hearts, then we can face any storm because we are not wobbly in the winds of life. But if we hear God’s voice and choose to ignore it, it’s as if you’re building your house on a soft, sand foundation that is far more susceptible to the storms. Which, if you ask just about anybody, is unwise and downright stupid!

Once I learned to apply that in my life, my love for the Bible increased because by the second year of college, I was tired of feeling like I’d fallen over every single time something difficult occurred in my life. Because I now know my Bible much more deeply and have allowed the words to penetrate my heart, I am able to withstand the many storms we all face from busy semesters to difficult breakups to the sudden deaths of loved ones.

I am steady. I am winning. I am unafraid of what comes my way because my life is now built on a firm foundation.
